As most of Montana's ski resorts call it a season and start closing up shop for the year, it is never too early to start thinking about next season.

This past year, the ski season saw some ups and downs. There was eventually enough snow for most of the resorts to open up. We saw extreme temperatures in places, from very cold to very warm. That doesn't stop most Montana skiers from still hitting the slopes.

Now that spring has arrived, so has the frustration of skiers, after a resort closes for the season they can still see snow still falling in the mountains. That is the unpredictability of Montana weather.

We don't just rely on our snowpack for recreation in Montana, it also helps dictate what kind of fire season we may experience this year across the state.

One such Montana resort stands out above the others, literally, at least according to the readers of On The Snow. Big Sky Resort has been voted the best overall ski resort in North America. It is also home to the tallest ski hill in Montana, Lone Peak.

That is impressive, since the competition is tough. Not only did Big Sky beat resorts in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho, but they beat Canadian resorts too.
