Metallica’s ‘Hardwired … To Self-Destruct’ Album Passes 1 Million in Pure U.S. Sales
Good news for Metallica and their latest album, Hardwired ... To Self-Destruct, as Billboard reports the disc passing 1 million albums sold as of this week. Hardwired had already earned a platinum certification from the RIAA since streaming is factored in, as well, but this marks a high achievement when it comes to hard digital and physical sales of the disc, which now stand at 1,004,000 units.
While Hardwired has been a huge success on its own, the sales have been boosted in part by the band's promotion for their Worldwired tour in which fans who bought a ticket to a concert also received a copy of the album with their purchase.
Since Nielsen Music began tracking album sales in 1991, Metallica have sold over 58 million albums in the U.S. alone. In fact, the band's self-titled 1991 disc (aka "The Black Album") is the highest-selling album in the Nielsen Music era, with 16.6 million copies sold.
It has indeed been a good year for Metallica. Their Worldwired tour has been absolutely phenomenal. We caught their show in May in Long Island, N.Y., where they tore the place up with the help of Volbeat. They've appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to play the smash single "Now That We're Dead," and even released a second music video for the song, capturing how massive their live show is. The tour continues through the summer, hitting up stadiums across North America with support from Avenged Sevenfold, Volbeat and Gojira.
Congrats, Metallica!
