Michael Anthony: ‘Now’s the Time’ for Van Halen Tour With David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar
The question of whether Van Halen will tour again is a loaded one. If they do hit the road once more, will the band be fronted by David Lee Roth or the "Red Rocker" Sammy Hagar? Former bassist Michael Anthony has a solution to this dilemma: both.
As a guest on Eddie Trunk's SiriusXM program Trunk Nation, Anthony was asked about Hagar's recent remarks about being open to a reunion tour with Van Halen. "I think now's the time, especially if you listen to some of the interviews [Hagar] has been doing," began the four-stringer. "Right now he's saying the proper way to do a Van Halen tour, he's saying, 'Let's do it with Dave and myself.'"
The bassist propositioned that the singers would be responsible for an hour of material apiece onstage. "This way you mix it up and everybody's got to stay for everything. And believe me, if something like that came to fruition, I guarantee there wouldn't be one person who would leave that show disappointed with anything — with either singer, probably," said Anthony.
If this tour was to happen, it could only take place if "everybody was equally excited to do it." Anthony went on to explain, "Because you don't wanna go out and have it be work, you don't wanna do it and have people say, 'Well, they're doing it just for the money. I wanna truly go out there and just kick ass and give the people everything, and that's what it would have to be."
Anthony currently resides in the Hagar camp, remaining on the outs in Van Halen. The two, alongside drummer Jason Bonham and guitarist Vic Johnson make up Sammy Hagar & The Circle, who have a number of tour dates booked through the fall. See a list of stops at Hagar's website.
