This Halloween your neighborhood is bound to be filled with monsters, super hero's, princesses, and superstars. Let's make sure these guys have a fun and safe experience with these tips.

Growing up, and even now, Halloween was always my favorite holiday. The day you could dress up as anything or anyone you wanted and get candy for it! They should have an adult Halloween where they hand out hot sauce and beer. Alas, the day is for the children, so let's make sure they are safe. Here are some handy guidelines for the trick-or-treaters and the fine folks handing out the candy.

Trick or Treaters and Parents

  • Stick to familiar houses and neighborhoods. We've put together a handy map of user-submitted neighborhoods in Missoula with the (possible) best candy, but if you are unfamiliar, it might be best to stick to the neighbors, friends, and family.
  • Try and make sure the costumes have some bright colors or attach some reflective tape if you plan on being out after dusk.
  • Stick to sidewalks when possible. If you do have to walk your little ones across the street, this is a perfect time to teach them to always look both ways.
  • Check the Candy. We all know the idea of people putting drugs in candy started as an urban myth, but recently the Montana Attorney General has warned about the danger of Fentanyl being disguised in candy this year.
  • Dress for the weather. There is nothing worse than putting together an epic costume, only to have to bundle up with a snowsuit over the top of it. If you grew up in Montana, this has definitely happened to you, but better safe and comfortable than sorry.

Tips For Handing Out Candy

  • If you are loaded up with candy and are expecting the little ones to stop by, make sure your porch light is on and the walkway/driveway is well-lit.
  • Check to make sure your decorations, hoses, and landscaping isn't a tripping hazard. Remember the kiddos will probably have masks on and it can make it hard to see.
  • Stick to candy without any nuts. This is a big one. If a parent has a child with a nut allergy they will for sure check the candy, but it's best to be safe.
  • If you aren't feeling well, it's ok to skip Halloween. This is important. With the danger of Covid, the last thing we want to do is get the little ones sick and put them in danger. It's perfectly ok to leave a bowl of candy out for the honesty system, or a note explaining you aren't feeling well, and you want to keep the kids safe.

From all of us here at the station, have a safe and super fun Halloween!
