Montana Grizzlies Look to Rebound This Week Against an Old Rival

The Montana Grizzlies are heading back on the road this week to take on Idaho in the battle for the “Little Brown Stein”. The Vandals are one of Montana’s oldest rivals. In a contest that dates all the way back to 1903, the Griz with travel to Moscow looking to extend their six-game win streak against Idaho. The Griz suffered their first home loss since 2018 last week and they are hoping to have a big bounce-back performance on Saturday night in the Kibbie Dome.

Last week, Sacramento State Hornets stung Montana on our home turf and Idaho got trounced by Eastern Washington 71-21 in Cheney. The Griz have lost two straight Big Sky Conference games and are currently 4-2 overall. The Vandals are 2-4 overall and share the same conference record as Montana at 1-2. However, you can always throw the record books out the window with Griz and and Vandals meet on the field. This will be the 87th time these two schools have competed against one and other.

What is the “Little Brown Stein”?

The winner of Saturday's game will get to hold on to one of the most unique rivalry trophies in college football with the battle for the "Little Brown Stein". The trophy has been in the halls of the Adams Center at UM since 2000.

It was created by a student newspaper reporter in 1938 by the name of John T. Campbell ahead of a 19-6 Montana loss. However, Montana won the following year’s matchup and got to drink from the stein for the first time. The Griz have won 24 of the last 61 meetings since then.
