Radioactive Shrimp at Walmart? Montana Has Its Own Secret Supply
Perhaps you saw the news and thought, “Geez, first it was the lettuce, now the shrimp are glowing.” The FDA just raised the alarm about a potential recall of radioactive shrimp at Walmart. Before you toss your cocktail sauce in the garbage, don't worry too much; none of it is in Montana.
The recalled product was shipped to Walmarts in Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami. Which, if you’re keeping track, is four states and exactly zero Treasure State zip codes. Still, the image of radioactive shrimp sitting next to frozen pizzas at Walmart in Missoula paints a picture.
So, What’s With the Glow?
The FDA says some imports may have been tainted by radioactive contamination. Sounds more like the plot of a Godzilla prequel than a seafood dinner. Fortunately, Montana shoppers don’t have to worry about buying anything that doubles as a nightlight.
But here’s where it gets hilarious. You don’t have to roll the dice on imported seafood in Montana anyway. Because we farm shrimp right here in Big Sky Country.
Montana Has Shrimp Farmers?
Yep. Mission Valley Shrimp is a farm where a guy managed to create ocean water in a warehouse, filled it with a few dozen swimming pools, and now grows saltwater shrimp smack in the middle of cattle country. It’s basically Red Lobster meets Yellowstone.
The shrimp are clean, fresh, and as far as anyone knows, not radioactive. So if you’d rather not overthink your dinner, skip the Walmart freezer aisle and go for Montana-grown shrimp instead.
Who knew the landlocked state known for elk steaks and trout streams would also be serving up shrimp cocktails grown just down the road?
