The Montana Movie You Never Knew You Needed
If you’ve never watched Last of the Dogmen, here’s your chance. The movie is turning 30 years old this year, yet somehow still manages to fly under the radar. Which is wild because it may be the most Montana movie you have never known you needed.
It came out back in 1995. Tom Berenger plays a cranky bounty hunter who rides a horse as if it might gallop away with his feelings. He partners with an anthropologist, played by Barbara Hershey, and they stumble into something crazy. A secret tribe of the Cheyenne, living deep in the Montana wilderness
No roads. No electricity. No TikTok. Only survival, tradition, and some straight-up FAFO energy.
The movie takes place in a not-very-happy corner of the fictional “Oxbow Quadrangle,” a remote forest area in northwest Montana that looks and feels like the sort of place where people disappear and the trees don’t are not giving up secrets easily. This isn’t an actual location on the map, but if you’ve been in the Montana wilderness, you’ll recognize the vibe. (NOTE: The movie was filmed in Canada and Mexico.)
It’s not some giant flashy blockbuster. It’s quiet. It’s weird. And all while respecting the land in a way that most films do not. The mountains aren’t just a backdrop. And it’s not a story about taming the West. It’s a story about knowing when to leave well enough alone.
Plus, the soundtrack rips.
Best part? The entire movie is also available for free on YouTube. No login. No rental. Just click play and go. Mix yourself a strong drink, silence your phone, and let it transport you to a dark wilderness in Montana.
Oh! Did I mention is also stars "RED" from "That 70s Show?"
Happy 30th, Dogmen. Still holding up.
