A tragic accident late Tuesday night has resulted in the death of a 16 year-old girl.

Our news partners at NBC Montana report that the accident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Old Highway 10 West near Missoula.

Montana Highway Patrol troopers said two 16 year-olds were driving on Old Highway 10 when one of the teens said they thought the vehicle had run over something on the road.

The 16 year-old girl exited the vehicle to see what happened, and the Highway Patrol said the male driver thought the vehicle was in reverse, but it was in drive and the vehicle struck the girl who died a few hours later,

Investigating troopers said neither alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the tragic accident.

No names have been released.
