UM Montana Zooms Condoleezza Rice in April

Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be part of a "zoomed" Mansfield Lecture at Missoula's University of Montana April 18. Rice served in Republican President George Bush's administration. The live Zoom event will also feature Michael McFaul, who was US ambassador to Russia during Democratic President Barack Obama's administration.

The title of the Mansfield Lecture is "Fostering Freedom at Home and Abroad: A Conversation with Condoleezza Rice and Michael McFaul." The topics in the 11:30 a.m. online presentation April 18 will include topics that include the current Russian aggression in Ukraine. Rice and McFaul are at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. McFaul grew up in Montana. He was in Russia in 2014, when Vladimir Putin returned to the presidency.

UM President Seth Bodnar said in a news release, "The University of Montana embraces its role in supporting a knowledgeable and engaged citizenry. The Mansfield Lecture is just one way we support our students and the community in engaging grand challenges of our nation and the world." Bodnar will moderate the conversation and he expects Rice and McFaul will have comments on the challenges to democracy around the world and in rural areas of Montana and the US.

The event is free to the public, but the Zoom "seats" are limited. You can register at the University of Montana website.

The Mansfield lecture series started in 1968 in honor of the late U.S. Senator Mike Mansfield of Montana. The series is part of the Mansfield Center at UM in Missoula. Other speakers in the long-running series have included Milton Friedman, Barbara Tuchman, Dr. Anthony Fauci and Daniel Ellsberg.
