Montana-Filmed Western Bombs at Box Office
You remember being stoked that a movie was filmed here in Montana, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Pierce Brosnan, and then it comes out… and nobody cares? Yep, that's just what happened here with Unholy Trinity.
Shot at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Paradise Valley, Unholy Trinity was designed to be a gritty, star-studded Western throwback. Instead, it was quietly released in a handful of theaters on Father’s Day weekend, flopped with audiences and left people going, “Wait, that opened already?”
Critics and fans don’t seem to be able to decide whether it’s good or garbage. Critics are saying it would have been better to go straight to streaming, while fans are saying it was totally worth the price of popcorn and air conditioning.
Translation? Critics were bored, but audiences did sorta like it.
Some called it a “slow burn,” others referred to it as “brutally boring” and one guy compared it to a campfire that never sets flame. But for Montana, this is still bittersweet. We’ve become known as a real backdrop for Westerns. It might be the Yellowstone Film Ranch, which has been swarming with productions. So when a high-end flick like this one drops the ball, it can be hard not to take it a bit personally.
In the end, you be the judge. Does Unholy Trinity have the star power and story to elevate it to a great western? Are the critics just being rough on the movie because it doesn't have enough Academy Award-winning gusto?
