So, Montanans, brace yourselves: Wendy’s just announced they’re closing 140 locations across the U.S. by the end of 2024. CEO Kirk Tanner called these locations “outdated,” meaning they’re not pulling in the sales or delivering the Wendy’s experience customers expect. Could any of Montana’s Wendy’s spots be at risk?

Montana doesn’t have a Wendy’s on every corner. But, we cherish the locations we do have in the state. Especially when you have a craving to dip hot fresh fries in a cold chocolate frosty. (If you haven't tried it...YOU SHOULD)

Montana has 18 locations from Billings to Missoula, and a few other lucky towns. But, with only a handful spread across Big Sky Country, losing one could sting.

So, Why the Closures of So Many Restaurants Across the Country?

Wendy’s reviewed its stores and found some just weren’t cutting it in profitability or guest experience. The average sales at these closing locations are around $1.1 million, while Wendy’s considers $2 million the sweet spot. So, Wendy's figured it is out with the run-down and old locations, especially those in underperforming areas.

No specific locations have been announced yet, but with closures “spread across the U.S.,” it has this Baconator fan wondering if any of our Wendy’s will get caught in the mix.

There has Got to Be a Silver Lining.

Here’s some good news: while Wendy’s is trimming down, they’re also looking to open new stores in higher traffic areas than the old spots they are closing. CEO Kirk Tanner hinted that many of these closures will be offset by brand-new openings, so we may end up with an even better Wendy’s experience down the road.

The Bottom Line for My Baconator Buddies

I have already been researching how to make Frosty's at home. But, it is just not the same.  Let’s not panic just yet. Whether or not Montana makes the closure list, we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed that we won’t be saying “goodbye” but instead “see you at the grand reopening!”
