Smoke will be visible from some planned fires on the Bitterroot National Forest this fall. Officials plan to burn about 2,500 acres on the Darby/Sula Ranger District, up to 1,500 acres in the West Fork and 100 acres on the Stevensville district.

Tod McKay of the Bitterroot National Forest said the prescribed fires will be in three areas of the Darby/Sula Ranger District - Como/Horse Lick north of Lake Como, Trapper Bunkhouse southwest of Darby and Middle East Fork between Guide Creek and Tolan Ridge. The West Fork Ranger District will have prescribed burns north of Boulder Creek, on School Point, and east of Little West Fork along Forest road 5633B. There will be six slash pile burns throughout the district. And the Stevensville Ranger District has a prescribed burn east of Stevensville along Ambrose Road 428. McKay said the burning depends on weather conditions and happens annually between September and November. The updated information, check the Bitterroot National Forest Facebook page.
