Montana is famous as a place where people fly fish, snowboard and hunt, but it's underrated as a place for romance. The scenery is the perfect backdrop for every step in a relationship, splashing and flirting in the beautiful rivers during the summer, in the winter snuggling to stay warm. Maybe that's why Montana has the second-highest marriage rate in the country, according to the latest data from the CDC. The data is from 2019 and 2020, no other years have been released.

In 2020, Montana had a marriage rate of 10.4 per 1,000 people, second only to Nevada which had a rate of 21. A contributing factor from a legal perspective is that the state of Montana doesn't get in the way of citizens who want to be married. There's no law against common-law marriages so a couple doesn't necessarily need an official marriage license to join in matrimony. We also have a "wedding by proxy" law that allows two people to get married even if neither of them are present for the wedding.

Though Nevada has the higher marriage rate, I'd still argue Montana is more romantic, because I suspect half of Nevada's marriages are done by accident in Las Vegas. That's a joke, but Montana's divorce rate is lower, again according to data from the CDC. In 2020, Montana's divorce rate was 2.3 while Nevada's was 3. That's not a huge difference but I stand by my opinion. At the very least Montana should get its own romcom, and we probably will soon because those movies are finally back in style.
