The Bitterroot Valley and Missoula were hosts to a major television production over the past few years. Season 5 of the hit television drama, "Yellowstone" was exclusively filmed here in our own backyard. In seasons 1-3, the show had been mostly filmed in Utah, and occasional scenes took place on Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, MT. But, for seasons 4 and 5, the entire production moved to Montana.

Many of us signed up to be extras on the show. In fact, I am a little jealous I didn't try to somehow make it on the show. It is one of my favorites. Regardless, the filming that took place did have a handful of Kevin Costner sightings from residents of Missoula and the Bitterroot.

In the early parts of 2023, rumors began to swirl that Kevin Costner was leaving the show. Fans were freaking out at the thought of the patriarch of the Dutton Family no longer being on the show.

The rumors eventually became true, as Kevin Costner announced his departure from the show to work on another project that he is directing and starring in called "Horizon." He also has other movie projects that he is developing. So there is simply no time to be traveling back and forth to Montana to film "Yellowstone."

Now, it appears that we may have more sightings of Costner in Montana again.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Costner sat down with Entertainment Tonight to talk about his current projects and how he feels about his departure from "Yellowstone." His comments gave rise to speculation that he may return to the show for another couple of seasons.

I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.

Could season 5 be the last of the hit television show? Is Taylor Sheridan going to take it all the way to season 7? Is Kevin Costner going to make his way back to Big Sky Country? We will simply have to wait and see.

New episodes of "Yellowstone" are slated to air this upcoming November 2024.
