Live + Bush Roll Out Chris Cornell Tributes at 2017 Rock on the Range
Though a majority of the headlines went to Stone Sour's Corey Taylor and Christian Martucci, who led the Chris Cornell tribute in the headline spot that Soundgarden were set to hold at Friday's Rock on the Range, those weren't the only salutes to the late vocalist. Both Live and Bush made a point to include room in their sets to pay homage to one of rock's great voices.
Live waited until late in their performance for their Chris Cornell tribute, taking on Audioslave's "I Am the Highway" after a set filled with favorites like "Operation Spirit," "Selling the Drama" and "I Alone." "I Am the Highway" was the penultimate song in their performance, coming just ahead of the set closing "Lightning Crashes."
"This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written," stated Live's Ed Kowalczyk introducing the track. "It is one of the many gifts that the great and incomparable Mr. Chris Cornell gave to this world, so from our spirit to yours, we say thank you Mr. Cornell, brother, and God bless you." Meanwhile, Bush, who played earlier in the day, managed to work their Cornell tribute within the midst of another cover song. The band delivered a rousing edition of R.E.M.'s "The One I Love," pausing for a refrain of "Black Hole Sun" in the midst of it, before returning to their cover. Like Live, "The One I Love / Black Hole Sun" performance was the penultimate song of their set, following such Bush favorites as "Machinehead," "The Sound of Winter," "Everything Zen" and "Little Things" among others and before the set closing "Comedown."
