The inaugural Chicago Open Air festival took place over the weekend, bringing headliners like Rammstein, Disturbed and Slipknot to Toyota Park stadium in Brideview, Ill. Tragically, one fan died at the festival after falling from the mezzanine level on the opening night (July 15).

The Chicago Sun Times reports that 29-year-old Robert Smucz of the North Side in Chicago was pronounced dead at the Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. City spokesman Ray Hanania said Smucz fell over a railing of the mezzanine level of the stadium, which was two stories high, to the pavement below. The death stemmed from multiple injuries as a result of the fall.

The fall happened at just after 10PM, which would place it between the sets of Chevelle and headliner Rammstein on the Friday night bill.

A funeral for Robert Smucz is set for Thursday. We'd like to offer our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
