Missoula Man Catches People Trying to Steal His Truck

On Sunday, a Missoula Police Department officer responded to the 700 block of SW Higgins after a male reported seeing several individuals inside his 1999 Chevrolet Silverado without permission.

The officer arrived and made contact with four individuals who were inside or around the truck. One of the females, identified as 30-year-old Brittany Hubbard, was standing next to the passenger door of the vehicle. Hubbard did not initially comply with the officer’s directives and was frantically moving around, apparently concealing items inside the truck. Police Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold explains.

“Additional officers arrived on scene,” Arnold said. “During the initial interviews with the involved parties, they observed indicators of drug use such as fidgeting, shaking, body demeanor, slow speech, and other indicators. Officers observed quite a bit of damage to the vehicle. When officers asked the additional male on scene, 29-year-old Danial Hendry, what he was doing, Danial told officers he was told by an unknown person that if he could start the truck, he could have it.”

An officer spoke with the fourth involved party who said she thought it was weird that someone Hendry barely knows would let him borrow the truck. She also said Hendry told her he was working on a payment plan for the truck. When she asked Hendry if he had paperwork for the truck, he told her something had been written down on a piece of paper. She also found this to be odd. She explained that the longer the parties were near the truck, the worse she felt about the situation.

“Officers requested the owner of the trunk to come on scene,” Arnold said. “The owner told the officers what he had in his vehicle and confirmed the damage done to the vehicle was not there before. Brittany told officers she had items in the truck, including a bag. After Brittany and Danial were taken into custody, a preliminary test was done on the substances within the bag. The preliminary tests indicate the substances to be meth and heroin.”

Officers located two syringes hidden under some roofing nails. One of the syringes appeared to be filled with blood and the other contained heroin and meth. Court documents indicate this mixture is commonly referred to as a “speedball.” The syringes were located in the part of the truck that Hubbard had been frantically accessing when the officer arrived.

Hendry was charged with felony attempted theft and obstructing a peace officer because he initially provided a fictitious name. Hubbard was charged with felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs and criminal possession of drug paraphernalia.

This is the third time this year Hendry had been charged with a felony offense. In January, he was charged with theft and possession of heroin. In February, he was charged with possession of heroin again.
