If you drive in Montana be aware of this scam that has been making the rounds. In Missoula, we have it on good authority that the "cameras" you see on top of traffic lights are not recording anything at the moment. Since they don't record anything, imagine my surprise when I got an email from the "Department of Transportation" saying that I broke the law.

According to the Email, I Am Going to Become A Fugitive in Montana

According to the email, I ran a red light. This is what the email said:

Our traffic cameras recorded you running a red light on March 07, 2023. As such, you have been charged with a traffic citation.

You may contest this citation in court, or pay the fine online at (a fake website). You may do so no sooner than March 20, 2023 and no later than March 24, 2023.

The Sure Signs of a Scam

This is a scam. There were a few things that made me aware that it was a scam.

  1. I never run red lights, I obey the laws.
  2. The cameras in Missoula do not record, so there would be no record of that happening.
  3. The email address that it came from and where they are directing me, end in a dot com, not a dot gov.
  4. They sent it to my work email, not my personal email address.
  5. There is no phone number on the email.
  6. It isn't signed by anyone.
