Montana Outdoor Gear Warning: Ozark Trail Recall
If you’ve done any hiking in Montana or any time in a Walmart, you’ve probably owned an Ozark Trail bottle. Big, stainless, sturdy. Enough water to fill a horse trough. But if you still have one in the pack, you might want to make sure the lid is on tight… because they are now being recalled after reportedly blowing up in people’s faces.
Yeah. Not a joke.
Exploding Lids, Real Injuries
Walmart recently issued a recall of more than 850,000 of their 64-ounce Ozark Trail bottles due to the lid launching off them like a giant bottle of champagne. Three people have already taken one in the face. Two of them permanently damaged their eyes.
Let that sink in. A few people left to hydrate and returned, requiring an eyepatch.
Pressure can build up over time if you happen to put carbonated drinks, juice or, yes, even milk into the bottle, according to the official recall notice. When you open it? Boom. Surprise face punch.
Model 83-662 — The Jug in Question
So if you purchased a bottle that looks like a giant silver tank with a black screw-top lid from Walmart, check the box it came in. The timepiece to avoid is model number 83-662. But let’s be real here, none of us kept the box. So if it resembles a mini missile silo and costs around fifteen bucks, it’s likely the one.
What To Do Now
Stop using it. Immediately. Duh!
Get your refund. Walmart is providing cash refunds with no receipt required. Just dial 800‑925‑6278 or stomp into the store like a trail warrior.
