There is an ongoing stereotype about our neighbors to the north. Canadians are just way too polite. It is a stereotype that they have no problem living up to, and continue to do on a regular basis. That is why it is no surprise that most of the states closest to Canada, also tend to be polite. Well...except for the north eastern states.

The website Yougov.com recently asked 77,000 Americans whether they thought people in their state we more rude or more polite than those in other states. As it turns out, the rudest state in the country is also the smallest. The people in Rhode Island feel that residents of their state are more rude than polite.

According to Yougov.com

42% say they believe people in their state tend to be more rude than most Americans. Just 9% of Rhode Island’s residents say they think their population is unusually polite.

The remaining states in the top 10 rudest states are mostly neighbors to Rhode Island. States like Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut and New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Others in the top 10 rudest include California and Nevada.

Now, on the other end of the coin, the state farthest away from Canada  believes they have the most polite people in the country.

According tot Yougov.com

Three in five (60%) Hawaii residents say that people in their state tend to be more polite than most Americans, while just 10% think their residents are ruder than most.

Now, we already know Montana is full of some nice people. But, how many of us believe that we are nicer than other states? A whopping 48%, making Montana the 5th most polite state in the country.
