Well, it’s time to do a little inventory of your canned goods. If you have a stash of tuna from Costco, you may want to pump the brakes before whipping up that sandwich. Your tuna may be at risk of botulism. Here's why a recall was issued on certain canned tuna. Yikes.

What’s the Deal?

Tri-Union Seafoods is recalling certain canned tuna products over a manufacturing defect found in easy-open lids. If the seal’s not tight, bacteria can slip inside, and that’s where botulism becomes a concern. For those e not familiar with it, botulism is an illness that can cause paralysis or death.

What Tuna is Affected?

The recall encompasses Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brands, as well as some 7-ounce cans sold exclusively at Costco in certain regions. If you’ve been stocking up, it’s one to double-check your pantry.

What Should You Do?

Inspect Your Cans: See if any of the recalled brands are present.

Don’t Eat It: Even if it seems OK, botulism is not worth the risk.

Toss or Return: Either get rid of it safely or bring it back to the store for your money.

An Excuse to Try Something You Haven’t?

And while a tuna recall isn’t good news, maybe it’s the universe telling you to buy that elk jerky or finally go catch your own dinner. Be safe, Montana, and when in doubt, which should be never, throw it out!

For more information, see the official recall notice on the FDA website.
