Tragedy struck on Monday between Missoula and Lolo as one juvenile male was killed and two other individuals were badly injured in a two vehicle crash that occurred on icy roads.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Wes Whitlatch was the investigating officer and described what happened.

“A southbound minivan lost control on U.S. 93 South near mile marker 87,” said Whitlatch. “The vehicle crossed the center line and entered the northbound lanes, clipped the rear of a northbound van causing it to rotate, and then a second northbound sedan struck the minivan near the front passenger door.”

Whitlatch described the injuries sustained in the crash.

“The female adult driver of the minivan was ejected and transported to the hospital with serious injuries,” he said. “A juvenile occupant did not survive, and the driver of the sedan was also transported with serious injuries. The female driver of the minivan was likely not seat belted, which is what caused her to become ejected during the crash.”

Whitlatch has this advice for those traveling in the Missoula area at this time.

“My advice would be to stay home if you don't need to go anywhere” he said. “If you do absolutely have to go anywhere, please leave early, slow down, be vigilant and make sure you wear your seat belt.”

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for this evening and a Winter Weather Advisory for Tuesday.
