In 2015, Tool drummer Danny Carey and Mastodon frontman Brent Hinds had enlisted Dimitri Coats of the hardcore punk outfit Off! to complete the lineup for a new collaborative project. Under the moniker Legend of the Seagullmen, the trio released two MP3 recordings without a record label—then seemingly vanished.

Fast forward to 2017, and Legend of the Seagullmen have migrated back into the rock ecosystem, this time promising a proper full-length studio release, and announcing a special New Years Eve performance supporting Primus.

The announcement of the latter came courtesy of Primus's Twitter account on Tuesday.

A message about the event posted to Legend of the Seagullmen's Facebook page was shared today.

The show, titled "A Goblin in the New Year" according to Primus' website, will take place on Dec. 31 at The Fox in Oakland, Calif. Tickets will be made available for pre-sale tomorrow and can be purchased here.

As for the impending Legends of the Seagullmen debut, news of the album came via the Instagram account of filmmaker and animator Jimmy Hayward (Finding Nemo, Horton Hears a Who!), who has been serving as producer on the album. The post was captioned with a thank you to Queens of the Stone age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, revealing he too is involved with the record.

While further album details have yet to formally be announced, the photo posted by Hayward has tagged Dine Alone Records along with Dine Alone label representative Joel Carriere, giving indication that, unlike previous Legends of the Seagullmen tracks, the album will go a more traditional release route. Music video production designer David Dreyer was also tagged in the post, inviting the possibility that the band's celluloid debut might also be in the works.

Legend of the Seagullmen's inertia since 2015 was perhaps understandable. Tool has been hard at work recording their fifth studio album (bassist Justin Chancellor recently stated that the album is "about 90% there") and wrapped up a U.S. tour in June. Mastodon, meanwhile, just released their Cold Dark Place EP, following frontman Troy Sanders's stint with his other supergroup, Gone is Gone, with members of Queens of the Stone Age and At the Drive-In.
