Dave Grohl Reveals ‘Biggest Misconception’ About Nirvana
Dave Grohl said the “greatest misconception” people have about Nirvana is that being in the band was a negative experience for him.
The Foo Fighters leader was asked the question in a new interview with GQ, which lead to a discussion about his four-year stint with Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic that came to an end with Cobain's death in 1994.
Grohl said fans think that his time in the group "was a bummer. It wasn’t always a bummer. There were times when it was so outrageously hilarious and fun. Kurt had an amazing sense of humor, and Krist Novoselic, if you’ve ever spent time with him, is one of the funniest people you’ve ever met.” Still, Grohl noted that being in the band had been like “living in a loud, distorted version of Monty Python – when it gets dark it gets fucking dark.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Grohl – who recently admitted he still can't listen to Nirvana for pleasure – discussed his admiration for Jimmy Page after watching live Led Zeppelin footage from the ‘70s. “He’s just going for it," he said. "It’s that sort of fearlessness that I respect most in musicians – not perfection or any sort of clean, technical proficiency. I like to see musicians right on the edge of just falling apart. And he did that in the most beautiful way."
Grohl was also asked to tell a joke, so he told one about musicians he's familiar with: “What’s the last thing the drummer said before he got kicked out of the band? ‘Hey guys, I’ve got a song I think we should play!’”
