Our nation's lawmakers have to share Washington, D.C. with a diverse group of residents. Among those residents are some of the most influential punk bands in history, and now, the D.C. Public Library decided to recognize this part of the city's history by creating the D.C. Punk Archive. Check out BBC's coverage in the video above.

In order to pay for this endeavor, the library hosted a fundraising show in its basement with local bands. It must have gone over well, because another show is already planned for Feb. 19. There is also a call for more local bands to come to the library -- which presumably means more shows.

Right on, D.C. Public Library.

In addition to the basement shows, the archive is being developed in large part through collections and items people have donated. The donations include everything from old zines to 7-inch singles to show flyers and posters. You can find out more about the archive, including new basement show dates, at the D.C. Library's website.
