Beware! The Season of The Sneaky Montana Porch Zucchini
We just passed a celebrated point on our calendar as August 8 was Sneak Some Zucchini Into Your Neighbor’s Porch Day, a tradition where you try to unburden as many Zucchini as possible from your garden and burden someone else with them.
It doesn't actually have to be snuck onto a porch to count. In Montana, it's how you play the game that counts. It's safer to ask if anyone wants your Zucchini, but you'll never get rid of them that way. Keep your doors locked.
I found this bag on the seat of my car
I have the task of trying to guess which neighbor left the goodies because it's not the first surprise. It started about a week ago when I found one random Zuke on the counter in my garage.
Went back into the house to ask if my wife knew what this "Thing" was doing in my garage and low and behold,
They multiply!
That'll teach me to leave the door open even for a minute. It's getting serious now. I don't even eat the things. My parents found a place with "good dirt" when I was a lad. Mom planted over an acre of Zucchini seed someone gave us. We had tons of it. I don't mean we had a LOT of it, I mean we grew TONS of Zucchini.
We ate it boiled, baked, and fried
It was hidden in casseroles and fritters, mashed in with potatoes. Zucchini bread served with everything, stuffed and baked, grilled, breaded, sauced, oh yeah, cubed and stirred in with Grits. Yes.
Looking back, I now understand we made do with what we had, and Mom did an outstanding job of it, even treating us kids to Frozen Zuke strips with Ice Cream drizzle. (I liked chocolate best) If we knew about Sneak Some Zucchini Into Your Neighbor’s Porch Day I might not be so traumatized. I should give Zucchini bread a try for old times' sake. Ease my way back into the Grits.
